Getting started with a morning exercise workout

If you follow me, and particularly if you check out my stories you'll see I am a regular on my mat in the morning.  Not every day but I do show up most days.  I've seen the benefit across the spectrum - in terms of my energies, sleep, mood, stress management, core strength, fitness and more.

Finding time to establish a morning routine means you start the day energised with your head in the right place.  It helps you manage and prep for whatever is coming up - wether it's something you're looking forward to - or a stressful action packed day.

But it can be hard to start... Here a quick Q&A to help you get going...

  1. Do you need to set an alarm?  Not every day - but if you know you've got an early start and a busy day ahead setting an alarm can give you just the impetus and the time to slot in a morning workout/routine.  It can also be helpful as you start to build a routine.

  2. What if I don't feel like it?  We all have good and bad days - and if you're still cycling monthy and in tune with your energies you'll know what's appropriate for where you are in your cycle.  BUT it's worth remembering that the hardest part is just getting to the mat - and even a 5 or 10 minute practice will be really beneficial - even more so if it helps you instil a regular routine.  If you are cycling then pick a routine (HIIT, Stretch, restorative yoga, breath-work) which will support you where you're at.

  3. Where do I start?  Start where you are now... so if you currently don't do anything find some youtube resources and see what works for you!  I'm a devotee of @yogawithadriene and like @thebodycoach, but I'm also looking to start including more #resistance work so will be trying some new routines soon.

  4. What if the morning takes over?  We all have those days when you leap out of bed all ready to jump on the mat, then before you know it you're on your phone scrolling through some social media, you get reminded about a tricky work email you need to do, your mother calls and the kids come and ask for pancakes for breakfast.. and the impetus has gone.  Try and remove all obstacles to getting to the mat - just do that first - everything else will be easier once you've finished.

  5. Should I do the same thing every day?  It's definitely horses for course!  Some friends and clients like the routine of the known - some yoga, journalling, mindful practice.. but for others it's variety which spices things up.  I would however say if this is the most exercise you're going to get in the day/week then mix it up!  Some yoga / pilates, HIIT and Resistance work will have benefits across the spectrum - from stress, sleep, core strength, bone health, metabolism, libido (yes you heard it here - building muscle will help with testosterone levels and that'll help in the bedroom department) and more.

  6. How to stay on track?  Team up with a workout buddy so you can keep each other accountable - or do as I do and post a video/pic of yourself on your stories.. it all helps!

Do you have a morning routine already?  I'd love to know what you do first thing in the morning?  Coffee or yoga?
